Fear the Future (Metro 2033)

Finally finished the game "Metro 2033" which started quite dull , boring and a complete S.T.A.L.K.E.R rip-off with nothing new to give, but ended up being even better than stalker and among my favourite games!

DX11 Effects in Metro 2033

Firstly, the graphics were just SUPERB! Ok in the begining it did look like a stalker ripoff , but the amount of detailing of every character and objects was just awesome. I suppose its thanks to the New Microsoft DX11 tessellation. And not to the forget the Depth of Field effect of DX11.

Depth of Field in Metro 2033 (DX 11)

We had the smoke that comes from the gun barrel after firing , or blowing up of the grenade that would just hang in the game atmosphere, and the Flash light , the shadows the green gloomy light , The Wind, the sparks from live open wires, candles, night vision, lanturns , insects around the light..And it just keeps on coming right until the end, when we are at the top of the Tower watching the Enemy "Base" Blow up (thanks to your brave game play). All of this just coming together and giving a very realistic Metro experience making you beg for more!

Night Vision along with flash light

The gameplay was quite simple.Just the usual FPS controls with crouch, run , jump and interact with items.Oh wait, there were some cool stuffs as well. The flashlight in the game used batteries.WTH, every flashlight uses that. And why are we even talking about it ? but in Metro 2033 , the cells had to be recharged every now and then or your flash light starts to go nearly dim. Even the Night Vision needed the charging of these cells. Also your gas masks ,for which you have to change filters from time to time, would start cracking during melee combat and ultimately breaking leading to death in a few seconds..All of this just added to one of its kind experience in the Game.

The Wrist watch showing the Illumination indicator & mask filter timer. Also the gas mask has started to crack.

The AI was not so good, but ok i would say. There was a ligth meter, that would tell how well lit you are. Green – You are hidden, Yellow – Better Crouch and move slowly , Red – Turn off the Lights. The enemy would just pass by from infront of me and not notice, or take cover on the wrong side of the object or somtimes even notincing me from behind the wall. But this much gltich you would find even in really good games like Crysis, specially if the game is not meant to be so focussed on stealth like Splinter Cell(Which apparantly has too much stealth.Like the Cloak mode in Crysis)

We also have these hanging cans and broken glasses, and other stuffs lying on the ground. The player has to make sure to not step on them and alert the enemies, speically if the enemy was "The Librarian" (who is really, really hard to beat). Also the way of getting around "The Librarian" in the game was quite new."Look the enemy in the eye and dont show your back" (Reminds you of the old camping trips and campfire stories, eh?)

The arrival of Hunter at the beginning of the Game. Great level of Detail along with awesome DX11 Effects

The enemies included mutant animals , Bandits (ah, STALKER!) , Communists, Nazis ( ok. what? ), flying demons (or Bitches as Bourbon used to say), Nosalis(Huge mutated Rats),Lurker (Small mole Rats), Librarian (toughest to fight, considereing you never fight with a " Flying Demon" in the game).

The Librarian

We also have strange anomalies (aha, STALKER again!) just moving around in the underground stages.

The various Metro Stations where like small towns with their own marketplace , houses and other "town stuffs".The currency used were "Millitery Grade Ammunitions". Quite a nice idea i would say.

The Lightning Anomaly as seen while travelling with "Khan"

Overall the game was much better than expected. Much better than Splinter Cell Conviction which was a rather huge dissappointment! There was nothing during the game in which you could say "Oh comeon, how is that possible(Even for a game)". As i said, every aspect of the game was highly detailed.

metro 2033 Graphics

My Ratings for the Game would be 8/10. Great Graphics and Gameplay but not so good depiction of a great Story.

So if you love to play FPS, specially games like Crysis , Bioshock and other good FPS survivor horro, then i would say this is a MUST PLAY for you!
